Champions League quarter-final draw – and our verdict on who goes through

Chosen by us to get you up to speed at a glance
Harry Kane will return to north London as Bayern Munich take on Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Kane has enjoyed a prolific season in the Bundesliga following his departure from Tottenham last summer and after taking on Manchester United in the group stages, he faces Arsenal in the the last eight.
The England captain will be desperate to knock his old rivals out of the Champions League and keep his hopes of silverware alive this season, with Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen leading the Bundesliga title race.
Bayern Munich fans have been banned from attending the away leg of their tie after their supporters threw fireworks on to the pitch during their 3-1 win at Lazio earlier this month.
There will also be another collision between the two favourites in the last eight, with Manchester City taking on Real Madrid a year after Pep Guardiola’s side humbled the Spanish side on their way to becoming European champions as part of their Treble.
City and Real have arguably been the two most impressive teams in Europe this season and many would have preferred them to meet later in the competition.
Should both Arsenal and Manchester City triumph over two legs they will meet in the semi-final, which would guarantee an English club in the final. There is another mouth-watering tie between Paris St-Germain and an improving Barcelona, while a third Spanish contender, Atlético Madrid, take on Borussia Dortmund.
In the Europa League quarter-finals, Liverpool face Italian club Atalanta while Alonso’s Bayern Leverkusen take on West Ham. The draw keeps alive the possibility of Alonso facing Jürgen Klopp in May’s final in Dublin.
Title rivals Arsenal and Manchester City are on a collision course in the Champions League – providing they come through tough quarter-final tests.
Arsenal face Bayern Munich while holders City play 14-time winners Real Madrid in the last eight. Telegraph Sport predicts who will come out on top.
Harry Kane returns to north London and will be hoping to add yet more goals to another prolific season on the way to knocking his old rivals out of Europe. Mikel Arteta’s team, though, will fancy their chances against a Bayern side that has lost its vice-like grip on the Bundesliga this season.
However, that will arguably make the Germans even more dangerous. Manager Thomas Tuchel has an excellent Champions League record and this is their last shot at silverware this year, given Bayer Leverkusen’s apparent march towards the domestic title.Prediction: Bayern Munich
A heavyweight collision between Madrid’s grand old aristocrats of Europe and the nouveau riche of Manchester City would have been many people’s choice for a final.
Pep Guardiola’s side humbled Real on the way to becoming European champions last season but this promises to be a demanding match-up for a team that is involved in a three-way fight for the Premier League title.
If there is one team in Europe brimming with confidence, it’s the Liga leaders who boast an in-form Jude Bellingham. It will be tense and taxing.Prediction: Manchester City
Both sides will be relieved to be on this side of the draw. Neither are quite the force of old but have been efficient in Europe this season. PSG were on the brink of going out in the group stage and struggled against Newcastle United.
They needed a controversial late penalty to salvage a draw at home and lost 4-1 at St James Park, but making it to the quarter-finals will only give them more confidence.
And what a way it would be for Kylian Mbappé to leave his hometown club as European champions. He will be highly motivated and can win a game against any team. Barcelona are third in La Liga, eight points behind leaders Real Madrid but looked strong in their round of 16 victory over Napoli.Prediction: PSG
Diego Simeone’s side are always horrible to face in knockout football, as Inter Milan discovered in the previous round. However, they will be under the pressure of performing as favourites against a young Dortmund side containing a fresh and revived-looking Jadon Sancho, who returned to his former club on loan from Manchester United in January. The Spanish should be too streetwise over two legs.Prediction: Atlético Madrid
Quarter-finals:
Arsenal vs Bayern MunichAtletico Madrid vs Borussia DortmundParis St-Germain vs BarcelonaReal Madrid vs Manchester City
Semi-finals:
Atletico Madrid or Borussia Dortmund vs Paris St-Germain or BarcelonaArsenal or Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid or Manchester City
It sounds like Uefa will be announcing them at 5pm UK time.
Benfica or Marseille vs Liverpool or AtalantaBayer Leverkusen or West Ham vs Benfica or Marseille
So we are set up for a potential Klopp vs Alonso final.
Is the final Europa League quarter-final so the draw in full is:
AC Milan vs RomaLiverpool vs AtalantaBayer Leverkusen vs West HamBenfica vs Marseille
Xabi Alonso will return to England, but he will be heading to east London rather than Merseyside.
Liverpool fans will be heading to Bergamo. A friendly draw for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Who will they face? Possibilities of West Ham or Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen…
And they will play Roma. An all-Italian tie in the Europa League quarter-finals.
He remains a cult hero at Spurs for the goal he scored at the Etihad to send them through to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.
Yes, why not? We are doing very well in this competition and winning the games. Mentally, we are strong and top in confidence. We are going to need it to beat Real Madrid. We are confident – in the last years we’ve been fighting for this competition and last year we won it. We hope we can keep the winning run going.

We have been playing them a while now in the last few seasons. We all remember when we beat them in the semi-final last year – it was amazing.
Last season when we played them at home in the second leg we played a top, top game. We know how strong they are – they are top of the league. They have good players, play good football and they have one of the best players in the world.
Liverpool fans will be waiting for that, and they will be heartened by seeing Arsenal and City planted in the tougher half of the Champions League draw.
The German side ran out 10-2 aggregate winners in the 2017 last-16. Even accounting for Kane’s good record against them, you would fancy Arsenal to keep it to single figures this time.
Bayern also knocked Arsenal out in 2013, when they won the Treble, and 2014 under Guardiola. Going further back, Bayern eliminated Arsenal 3-2 on aggregate in 2005.
Fair to say Arsenal have some demons to slay.
This is the third successive season the clubs have met in the knockout stages. In 2022, Real Madrid produced more Bernabeu magic with two late goals to leave City stunned in a 6-5 aggregate triumph.
City gained revenge in emphatic style in last year’s semi-final, when they took Real apart in the second leg at the Etihad.
Kane scored 14 goals in 19 appearances against Arsenal for Spurs, with seven of those penalties. The England captain has been on the losing side on his last three visits to the Emirates, however.
Strangely, there will be no travelling Bayern fans for the first leg. So if Kane scores, it will be greeted with near silence.

The semi-finals will be:
Atletico or Dortmund vs PSG or Barcelona.
Arsenal or Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid or Man City.
A very strong likelihood that the winner comes from the latter side of the draw.
The club who took Neymar from the Nou Camp, and memories of the remontada in 2017.
A re-run of last year’s semi-final when City gave Real a pasting at the Etihad. The two favourites drawn against each other.
Is the second quarter-final out of the hat. You’d say the two weakest teams left in the competition.
Harry Kane will be going back to north London. That is a cracking draw.
Is Arsenal! They will be at home in the first leg.
A safe pair of hands if his playing style is anything to go by. Break things up, keep it simple, no tricks…
Reflecting on his experience playing in the Champions League with Chelsea, Mikel says: “Once the music comes on, the energy goes through the roof.”
He says he hopes for one or both of City and Arsenal reach the final at Wembley, and wishes his former manager Carlo Ancelotti luck with Real Madrid. Not that they need it.
“Emotions are at our doorstep.”
The ceremony is about get started but as seasoned watchers of Uefa draws will know, it will be some time before the first ball is drawn.
Can Manchester City match that achievement this season?

Bayern Munich fans have been banned from attending the away leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie after their supporters threw fireworks onto the pitch during their 3-1 win at Lazio earlier this month, the club said on Tuesday.
Uefa fined Bayern €40,000 after travelling fans set off fireworks during their 2-1 win at Copenhagen in October. Bayern were given a suspended one-match ban from purchasing away tickets in December. The incident at Lazio triggered the ban.
The club will not appeal Uefa’s decision, Bayern said in a statement.
“We have to accept this punishment. Not only were pyrotechnics set off, but also fired deliberately onto the field, directly endangering bystanders,” Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said.
“This was such an explicit violation of the conditions of probation that an appeal is unfortunately futile.
“The fact we now have to play away without the support of our fans is a big blow. A small group of individual offenders have done a disservice to all our supporters and the team.”

Both Milan clubs reached the semi-finals last year, but there is no Italian club in the quarter-finals this time around. Napoli’s desperately disappointing season continued as they were knocked out by Barcelona, while penalties did for Inter at Atleti. I reckon City and Arsenal will be pleased to see the back of Inter, who have an outstanding domestic record this season and pushed City hard in last year’s final. For all their histrionics, you would rather play Atletico.
What it’s all about 🥰#UCLdraw pic.twitter.com/dz0A9V2GD7
Came in 2010 when they were knocked out by Barcelona. Pep Guardiola’s side were dazzling in an utterly dominant 45 minutes at the Emirates but went in at 0-0. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice early in the second half, before Theo Walcott and a Cesc Fabregas penalty drew Arsenal level at 2-2. Fabregas took the penalty with a broken bone in his leg and aggravated the injury. With Barcelona in pole position due to the away goals rule, Lionel Messi put Arsenal to the sword with four goals at the Nou Camp.
Barcelona are one of Arsenal’s potential opponents this year, and the task would be nothing like as daunting.
Arsenal and Manchester City await their Champions League quarter-final fate this morning, and in truth both Premier League title contenders will be keen to avoid each other.
Playing English opposition dilutes some of the novelty and glamour of European competition, and Arsenal and City also play each other in the league on March 31st, around 10 days before the Champions League quarter-final first leg.
City are favourites to retain the trophy, and cruised through their last-16 tie against Copenhagen. Things were more stressful for Arsenal as they required penalties to get beyond Porto and reach a first Champions League quarter-final since 2010.
Real Madrid are likely to be City and Arsenal’s stiffest opposition, with an attack lead by Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior, but they toiled against RB Leipzig and are still waiting for key personnel such as Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao to return from long-term injuries.
Barcelona and Bayern Munich appear vulnerable, although there is the prospect of Harry Kane returning to England to haunt either the club who tried to sign him or his former north London rivals.
PSG continue their quest to win the Champions League, and have arguably the world’s best player in Kylian Mbappe, but they have habitually disappointed in the knockout stages.
Borussia Dortmund are probably the weakest team left in the competition, while it was a surprise to see last year’s finalists and runaway Serie A leaders Inter knocked out by Atletico Madrid.
The group stage and last-16 draws were pretty cushy for City and Arsenal; you wonder if something nastier is waiting around the corner.
We will also have updates from the Europa League draw which follows, with Liverpool and West Ham in the hat. As reported by Jeremy Wilson, Man Utd fans find themselves in the strange situation of needing the English clubs to succeed in Europe to secure the extra Champions League place.
